Is the drive gear blue?

Have a look at this page for reference and scroll about 1/2 way down to the TH350 section:

You already did some investigation and determined you need a 2.9:1 ratio. You cannot buy a 29- or 30-tooth driven gear, so you need a different drive gear. So, you need a 7-tooth drive gear and a 20-tooth driven gear.

I also wanted to add that most Monte SS rears are 3.42's not 3.73's you might want to check that first of all...

I looked it up on a different forum thats nothing but monte ss information and topics it says that:
What was the rear gear ratio for the SS?
For 1983 and 1984 Monte Carlo SS's, the rear differential ratio was 3.42:1
for 1985 through 1988 Monte Carlo SS's, the rear differential ratio was 3.73:1
There were no other gear combination options available.
The rear end i have came from a 1987 monte ss i know that its possible that it could be the 3.42:1 but the owner of the car that had it before me told me that it was a 3.73:1...
here is the page that had this information on it

Thanks for looking out for me though

It looks that way. Here is another link with gears and their colors.

3-speed MCSS had 3.42 and 4-speed MCSS had 3.73. The 4-speed came about early in the 1985 model year.

Check the codes stamped on the front of the axle tube and/or open the cover and read the ratio stamped on the ring gear. It would be a bummer to get the wrong drive/driven gears.
