Darwinskeeper has been talking about that same Malibu. Pretty sweet that he managed those times + gas mileage.

On another note, with the old '78 stock 305 (#5 intake lobe was half-worn, but overall it still ran pretty decent), headers + 2¼" exhaust, Holley Street Dominator II (low-rise dual plane), 1405 Edelbrock, 3-speed Saginaw, 2.29s, and ~30" tires I managed around 21mpg, and the car actually still felt quite peppy for what it was... turned about 1800rpm at 70mph.

Thanks for the help guys! I will start looking for a set of those heads. What were they found on? Mainly monte ss'?
Look for any L69 Monte Carlo SS, Camaro, firebird, Trans am or any 305 from 1980 - 99 with the last three numbers #416.

My '78 marine 305 was rated at 225 hp factory. I know vortec heads are popular but I can't see shelling out all that dough for the vortec intake and gasket. I'm trying to find what pre vortec heads would be the next best thing to get a nice bump in power.

Uh, guess I found my answer listed already the 416's? What kind of extra power would these provide versus the stock '78 heads?

intake, cam, exhaust carb ingnition will get you 220-250hp easy
heads and compression bump from low 8:1 to mid 9s:1 would help ALOT

i ran a 214/[email protected] .420/.442 in mine... liked it alot.

remember 87-88 Monte SS 's had centerbolt heads. (# 14101081), those would need the later intakes.
The 081 heads would be a good choice but I like the 601 heads they have a smaller combustion chamber than the other 305 heads. Used a set of 601s on a 350 with dished pistons and a mild .480 lift roller it made 330 hp and 345 tq was a lot of fun in an s10.

225 horse would be great for the time being. Make the car a little more fun to drive at least. Im gonna start looking around for a set of 416 heads. Any of you guys know what a machine shop would charge to freshen up a set of heads? Maybe just a ballpark figure? Thanks again guys

granted this is BBC heads

hot tanked
i have 16 guide done
3 angle cuter on all valve seat
all exhaust opend to 1.88 from 1.72
and a guide fixed
with 16 new valves 86.00 for intake and 86.00 for exhaust ~170.00 in valves
im ~370.00 out the door..
not includeing springs, reatainers, locks and seals. if you get new ones.
that does not include a valve seat finish job which im doing myself

decking would be more if needed

single angle valve job would be cheaper then a 3 angle.

i have had just a valve job done grind valves and seat and i laped them for 100-150 bucks including getting the heads hot tanked.
